Getting There & Away
Grupo Mecula buses to Pemba (Mtc350, seven hours) depart Nacala daily at 5am from the
Mecula garage. Head down Rua Principal to the large roundabout, then follow the street
going left and uphill next to Mozstar. Mecula is about 400m up on the left, behind an un-
marked wall.
There are chapas each morning to Nampula (Mtc160), Namialo (Mtc80) and Monapo
(Mtc75, one hour), departing from the big tree next to Telecomunicações de Moçambique.
Once in Monapo (ask your hotel for help in timing the connection), there's onward trans-
port to Mozambique Island and Namialo (the junction town for Pemba).
Getting Around
To get to Fernão Veloso, follow the left fork where the road splits after after entering
Nacala, and continue for 2km to the unmarked airport and military base turn-off to the
right. Go right here. After about 9km watch for the signposted Libélula left-hand turn-off
opposite the base, from where it's another 1.5km.
Chapas run frequently from the port area past Hotel Maiaia and on to Nacala Alta
(Mtc5) - the best place to catch these is from the blue container opposite Hotel Maiaia -
and then from Nacala-Alta to Fernão Veloso (Mtc10).

This lively rail and road junction was formerly known as Novo Freixo. With its dusty
streets, flowering trees and large university student population, it is the economic centre
of Niassa province and a convenient stop-off if you're travelling to/from Malawi. The sur-
rounding area is known for its garnet gemstones and for its scenic panoramas, especially
to the east around Mt Mitucué (Serra Mitucué).
