History
It's only recently that Nampula has come into its own, having spent much of the 19th cen-
tury languishing in the shadow of nearby Mozambique Island. The construction of a rail
link from the coast in the 1930s and the expansion of nearby Nacala's port in the late
1940s boosted Nampula's growth as a rail junction and administrative centre. Today, it's
the capital of Nampula province (Mozambique's second most populous province after
Zambézia) and the commercial centre of the north.
