MARRABENTA FESTIVAL (MOZAMBIQUE)
To hear marrabenta - Mozambique's national music - at its best, don't miss the annual
Marrabenta Festival. It's held mostly in Maputo, but also in Beira, Inhambane and several
other locations. The timing is set to coincide with Ma- rracuene's Gwaza Muthini com-
memorations. See ccf moz.com.
N'CWALA (ZAMBIA)
The Ngoni people hold this thanksgiving or 'first fruits' festival in late February near
Chipata in eastern Zambia. There's plenty of food, dance and music for celebrating the ap-
proaching end of the rainy season and to pray for a successful harvest.
April
The long rains are finally tapering off, with green landscapes everywhere and still-
muddy roads. Visitor numbers increase in connection with the Easter holidays. Bird-
ing is at its best, and Victoria Falls are swathed in spray.
KUOMBOKA (ZAMBIA)
Kuomboka is celebrated by the Lozi people of western Zambia at the end of the rainy sea-
son to mark the journey of their litunga (king) from his compound on the Zambezi flood
plains to higher ground. Dates vary.
