Ugezi Tiger Lodge $$
( 84-599 8410; www.ugezitigerlodge.co.za ; campsite per person Mtc350, s/d Mtc1500/
2280; ) Anglers, or anyone wanting an escape to nature, will love this rustic fishing
camp perched on a hill overlooking Lake Cahora Bassa. There's a choice of camping; ba-
sic, somewhat faded chalets on the densely vegetated hillside; or two eight- to 12- person
self-catering houses. It's all very no-frills but the morning scenery on the lake at the base
of the property (there's no beachfront) is beautiful. The restaurant serves delicious grilled
fish, and boats are available for fishing charters and for lake tours up towards the dam. It's
about 14km from Songo town and 6km beyond the dam.
LODGE
Information
The dam, including the impressive underground turbine rooms, can be visited with ad-
vance arrangement only. Contact the offices of Hidro- eléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB;
252-82221, 252-82224, 252-82157) in Tete, or in Songo town (look for the HCB office
in the substação or substation) and ask for Relações Públicas (Public Relations), which
will help you organise things. There's no charge for a visit, and permits are no longer ne-
cessary to enter Songo. However, you'll need to get a letter of approval from HCB; allow
at least 24 hours.
Getting There & Away
Chapas run several times daily between Tete and Songo (Mtc150, three to four hours), de-
parting Tete from the old correios building. Once in Songo, it's another 7km down to the
dam, which you'll have to either walk or hitch. Ugezi Tiger Lodge does pick-ups from
Tete.
