Getting There & Away
Air
LAM
( 252-22056; Avenida 24 de Julho)
flies several times weekly to/from Maputo,
Beira, Lichinga, Nampula, Quelimane and Chimoio. The airport is 6km from town on the
Moatize road (from Mtc100 in a taxi); take any
chapa
heading to Moatize.
Bus & Chapa
A new bridge across the Zambezi is under construction about 6km downriver from the ex-
isting bridge (which is currently operating one lane only, and is frequently backed up).
Beira
To/from Beira, the best option is
TCO
( 252-22191; cnr Avenidas Julius Nyerere
& Liberdade)
, departing Tete Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 5am (Mtc890, seven to
eight hours) from the TCO ticketing office opposite the gas station by Clube de Chingale.
Departures from Beira are Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6am. Travellers to Chimoio
will be charged the full Beira fare.
Chimoio
To/from Chimoio (Mtc400, six to seven hours), transport leaves from opposite
Prédio Emose on Avenida da Independência, just down from Smart Naira hotel and near
Univendas. The first departures in each direction are between 4.30am and 5am, which
means that if you're travelling from Chimoio to Blantyre (Malawi) via Tete, you'll be able
to make the journey in one long day without overnighting in Tete, after walking across the
bridge to catch transport to Zóbuè.
Songa
To Songo (for Cahora Bassa Dam), several pick-ups daily depart from the old
cor-
reios
(post office) building in the lower part of town near the cathedral (Mtc150).
Moatize
For Moatize (Mtc10),
chapas
depart throughout the day from the Moatize bus
stand on Rua do Qua.
Boroma
To Boroma, there are occasional direct
chapas
leaving from Mercado da OUA
on Avenida 25 de Junho. It's possible to hitch, although the going is slow. The best place
to wait is at the Boroma road junction, about 1.5km west of Mercado da OUA.
Ulóngwe
To Ulóngwe, there is at least one direct
chapa
departing daily from Mercado da
OUA. Otherwise, take any car heading to Zóbuè, get out at the Angónia junction about
15km before Zóbuè and get onward transport from there.
Malawi
For Malawi,
chapas
run to Zóbuè (Mtc150, 1½ to two hours, 115km northeast of
Tete) from the far (Moatize) side of the bridge (to your left, just after crossing the bridge).
