In-Depth Information
sides. Although there is plenty of local cross-border activity, the only official border
crossing is between Machipanda and Mutare (Zimbabwe) on the main road.
It's possible to arrange to sleep in the compound of a local family at Casa Gaswa (
82-380 2330, 82-659 0358; giftmashiri@yahoo.com.br; 2-person rondavel Mtc500) , a
simple but nice rondavel in Penha Longa's Mutombombwe area. Local-style meals can be
arranged, but it's a good idea to bring some food and drink with you from Manica. If Casa
Gaswa is occupied, you can also pitch a tent on the grounds (campsite per person
Mtc150).
Next door and under the same management is Casa Mutombombwe ( 82-380 2330,
82-659 0358; giftmashiri@yahoo.com.br; 4-person house Mtc1500) , a simple but well-
equipped self-catering house with electricity that sleeps up to four people. Hiking guides
can be arranged at both places.
There's also camping and a few basic rooms in darkish thatch-and-brick cottages at
Quinta da Fronteira (Penha Longa Inn; 84-839 5311; penhalongainn@gmail.com;
campsite per person Mtc250, s/d Mtc600/1350) , an old mansion about 3km from Casa
Gaswa with a stream nearby and a once-lovely botanical garden. Bring all your own food
and drink. Pink Papaya ( Click here ) in Chimoio can help with arrangements for all of
these places.
Getting There & Away
Chapas Chapas run several times daily between Manica and Penha Longa (Mtc25, one
hour). From the chapa terminus in Penha Longa, it's a 20-minute walk to Mutombomwe
and Casa Gaswa, and from there, about 3km further to Quinta da Fronteira. Ask locals to
point out the way.
Car Driving, turn north at the Millennium BIM intersection in the centre of Manica town
towards the market. Continue past the market, staying left at the first fork. Penha Longa
village is reached after about 19km. Mutombomwe bairro (neighbourhood), Casa Gaswa
and Casa Motombombwe are about 2km further. The road is unpaved, but in reasonable
condition during the dry season.
