north and get stuck in Vila Gorongosa, this place (white with yellow trim) has no-frills
rooms and inexpensive meals. It's just east of the main road, opposite the main junction.
Information
Park headquarters ( 82-302 0604, 23-535010; contact@gorongosa.net) are in
Chitengo, about 15km east of the entry gate, from where rough tracks branch out to other
park areas. Vehicle rental, guides for wildlife drives, and excursions to a nearby village
can be arranged at park headquarters. Multinight bush walks and (in the wetter months)
canoe trips can be arranged through Explore Gorongosa ( Click here ) .
Getting There & Away
Air CFA Charters ( 21-466 881, 293-82055; www.cfa.co.za ) flies on request between
Vilankulo and Gorongosa National Park.
Road The park turn-off is at Inchope, about 130km west of Beira, from where it's 43km
north along good tarmac to Nota village and then 17km east along an all-weather gravel
road to the park gate. You can easily reach the park entrance with a 2WD, but for explor-
ing, you'll need a 4WD. Chapas heading north from Inchope to Gorongosa town (Vila
Gorongosa), about 25km beyond the park turn-off, will drop you at the turn-off, from
where you can arrange a pick-up with staff (advance booking essential). Pick-ups are also

MT GORONGOSA
Outside the park boundaries to the northwest is Mt Gorongosa (1862m), Mozambique's
fourth-highest mountain. Steeped in local lore, it's known for its rich plant and birdlife
and its abundance of lovely waterfalls. The mountain's slopes are the only place in south-
