CHIEF VILANKULO
Like many towns in Mozambique, Vilankulo takes its name from an early local chief
(régulo),
Gamala Vilankulo
Mukoke. The name was rendered as 'Vilanculos' during colonial times, but was then changed back to Vilankulo
after independence. Bairro Mukoke (Mucoque), west of Millennium BIM, is named after Gamala Vilankulo's son,
who lived there.
