Sights
At the northern end of town on the beach is the white and pink Dona Ana Hotel , built by
tycoon-entrepreneur Joachim Alves and about to reopen after renovations. Just inland are
the Millennium BIM building ( Click here ) , which used to be Alves' residence, and the
colourful Mukoke market Offline map Google map (Bairro Mukoke) .
The fish-market beach , below Varanda, is a hive of activity in the early mornings and
late afternoons when the fishers return with their catch.

CHIEF VILANKULO

Like many towns in Mozambique, Vilankulo takes its name from an early local chief (régulo), Gamala Vilankulo
Mukoke. The name was rendered as 'Vilanculos' during colonial times, but was then changed back to Vilankulo
after independence. Bairro Mukoke (Mucoque), west of Millennium BIM, is named after Gamala Vilankulo's son,
who lived there.

Diving
Diving is very good, although the main sites are well offshore (about a 45-minute boat
ride), around the Bazaruto Archipelago.
