Most visitors use Limpopo as a transit corridor between Kruger and the coast. There's
also the five-day Shingwedzi 4WD Trail, starting at Kruger's Punda Maria camp and con-
tinuing south through Limpopo park to the Lebombo/Ressano Garcia border crossing
(book through www.dolimpopo.com or www.sanparks.org ) .
Additional offerings include a four-day hiking trail from Massingir Dam west along the
Machampane River, and a three-day canoe expedition along the Elefantes (Olifants) River
from its confluence with the Shingwedzi River to its confluence with the Limpopo River.

CAMPGROUND
Campismo Aguia Pesqueira $
(campsite per person Mtc210, 2-person chalet Mtc1500) This good park-run camping
ground is along the edge of the escarpment overlooking Massingir Dam, about 50km from
Giriyondo border crossing. All campsites have views over the dam, plus braai facilities.
There's a communal kitchen and ablutions, plus several rustic self-catering chalets, also
with views.
Machampane Wilderness Camp $$$
( www.dolimpopo.com ; s/d tent with full board US$363/558) The upmarket Machampane
has five spacious, well-appointed safari tents in a tranquil setting directly overlooking a
section of the Machampane River, where you're likely to see (or at least hear) hippos plus
a variety of smaller wildlife and many birds. Activities are the highlight here and include
guided walks, a multinight hiking trail and a four-day canoe expedition along the Ele-
fantes River. Machampane Camp is about 20km from Giriyondo border crossing, and
pick-ups can be arranged from Massingir village or from Kruger park's Letaba camp
(where you can leave your car).

tw in traditional house US$60) This place - jointly run by Barra Resorts and the local
community - is about 13km outside Limpopo's Massingir gate on a rise overlooking the
dam. It was in the process of being upgraded as this topic was researched, and price
changes are likely. Currently on offer are camping and accommodation in local-style bun-
