Getting There & Away
Bilene is 140km north of Maputo and 35km off the main road. A direct bus departs
Maputo's Praça dos Combatentes ('Xikelene') at about 7am (Mtc130, five hours). Other-
wise, go to Junta and have any northbound transport drop you at the Macia junction, from
where pick-ups run throughout the day to/from Bilene (Mtc25, 30 minutes).
Leaving Bilene, direct departures are daily at 6am (and sometimes again at 1pm) from
the town centre near the market.
If you're driving, the road to Bilene is tarmac throughout. With a 4WD (or by charter-
ing a boat - possible at most hotels), it's possible to reach the other side of the lagoon and
beach on the open sea. Boats can also be arranged with local fishermen from about
Mtc250 return.
Limpopo National Park
Together with South Africa's Kruger National Park and Zimbabwe's Gonarezhou National
Park, Limpopo National Park (Parque Nacional do Limpopo; 21-713000;
www.limpopopn.gov.mz ; adult/child/vehicle Mtc200/100/200, payable in meticais or
South African rand) forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park. Gonarezhou
connections are still in the future, but Kruger and Limpopo are now linked via two fully
functioning border crossings.
Wildlife on the Mozambique side can't compare with that in South Africa's Kruger, and
sightings are still very hit and miss; it's quite possible to spend time in the park without
seeing large animals, yet Limpopo's bush ambience is alluring, and the park area also of-
fers the chance for cultural and adventure tourism. There are people living within the park
boundaries so it's likely that you'll see some of these communities on the park's eastern
fringes.
