In-Depth Information
Climate
Late May to early October is considered prime wildlife viewing time, but October can be
brutally hot. June to August is generally dry as well. December to April is the rainy sea-
son, and the landscape is vibrant; many lodges are closed during this time. If you're head-
ing for Victoria Falls, or looking for white-water rafting, August to December, when the
Zambezi's flow is reduced, is best.
Customs Regulations
There are no restrictions on the amount of foreign currency tourists can bring in or take
out of Zambia. Import or export of Zambian kwacha, however, is technically forbidden;
but if you take a small amount, it's unlikely to be a problem. Tourists can bring through
customs 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars, and 1L of spirits or 2L of lighter alcoholic beverages.
Electricity
Electricity supply is 220V to 240V/50Hz and plugs are of the British three-prong variety.
Embassies & Consulates
Most embassies or high commissions are located in Lusaka. The British high commission
looks after the interests of Aussies and Kiwis as the nearest diplomatic missions for Aus-
tralia and New Zealand are in Harare (Zimbabwe). Most consulates are open from 8.30am
to 5pm Monday to Thursday and from 8.30am to 12.30pm Friday; visas are usually only
dealt with in the mornings.
