Getting There & Away
Long distance buses link Mpulungu with Lusaka (ZMW150, 16 hours) via Kasama
(ZMW40, three hours) and Mpika (ZMW100, six hours). Minibuses also depart from near
the BP petrol station in Mpulungu for Mbala (ZMW15, 40 minutes).
GETTING TO TANZANIA
The MV Liemba, a hulking ex-German warship , leaves from Mpulungu harbour every second Friday, arriving in
Kigoma (Tanzania) on Sunday. Fares for foreigners travelling in 1st, 2nd and economy class are US$95, US$85
and US$65, respectively. Visas can be issued on the ferry and cost US$50 single-entry.

Along Lake Tanganyika are some attractive lodges that can only be reached by boat. They
can arrange to pick up guests from Mpulungu harbour.

person US$130) For a beautiful place to stay, try Isanga Bay Lodge. It's the perfect place
to make like Robinson Crusoe for a few days. There are breezy thatched and wood chalets
right on the beach, with small terraces and fabulous views of the lake, as well as smaller
stone rondavels in the gardens. Food is good and includes lots of fish pulled freshly from
the lake.
For the active there's beach volleyball, snorkelling, fishing and kayaking, plus trips can
be arranged to Kalambo Falls (per person US$15). Transfers can be arranged from Mpu-
lungu for US$105 per round trip. It's a 30-minute boat ride. Road access is only possible
by high-clearance 4WD.
