good guesthouses, decent shops and good bus connections. Kasama's environs are home
to ancient rock art and a beautiful waterfall.

The colours are garish and the garden is overflowing with stork statues, but inside the
rooms are a calmer shade and are cool and spacious. It's about 800m out of town on
Luwingu Rd, in the direction of Chishimba Falls. Look for the signpost to the right.
GUESTHOUSE
Thorn Tree Guesthouse $$

family from ZMW350; ) The Thorn Tree is family-run, homy and very popular so book
ahead to avoid disappointment. Rooms are either in the main house sharing spic and span
facilities or in larger family rooms, including a three-room cottage for ZMW410. There's
a bar and a restaurant serving fresh farm produce. The family also runs a safari company
specialising in tours of the little-visited northern region. It is well signposted from the
centre of town.
Eating
Kasama will be a welcome change to people who've been travelling in the north for a
while. There's a large Shoprite here with everything a self-caterer could ask for, as well as
a very good market.
JB Hotel $
(Golf Rd; mains ZMW20-40) The JB Hotel has a good restaurant at the rear which serves
local dishes such as nshima and chicken as well as more exotic dishes like sea bream
curry and chicken schnitzel. There's a verandah bar outside.
