Shiwa Ng'andu
0214
Deep in the northern Zambian wilderness sits Shiwa Ng'andu, a grand country estate and
labour of love of eccentric British aristocrat Sir Stewart Gore-Brown. The estate's crown-
ing glory is Shiwa Ng'andu manor house , which is a glorious brick mansion. Driving
up to the house through farm buildings, settlements and workers' houses it almost feels
like an old feudal domain: there's a whole community built around it, including a school
and a hospital, and many of the people now working at Shiwa Ng'andu are the children
and grandchildren of Sir Stewart's original staff. Today, Gore-Brown's grandchildren live
on and manage the estate, which is a working farm.

Guided tours of the estate, in a car or on foot, are also possible (though you are also
free to wander) and on the estate are 27 species of mammal, including puku, kudu, zebra
and wildebeest, although animal lovers should be aware it doubles as a game lodge. Shiwa
is also an important birdwatching area with about 380 species recorded here, including
long-toed fluff tails, palm-nut vultures, and, by the lake, pygmy geese, herons and king-
fishers.
