This uninspiring transit town, about 200km north of Lusaka, is at the southern end of the
Tazara railway from Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and at the fork in the roads to Lusaka, the
Copperbelt and Northern Zambia.
Coming from Tanzania, there's a passport check before exiting the station, then from
outside the station there's a mad rush for buses to Lusaka and elsewhere. Thieves and
pickpockets thrive in the crowds and confusion, so stay alert.
Buses and minibuses from Lusaka (ZK40,000, three hours) leave regularly and are a
quicker and more convenient option than the irregular local trains.
Ndola
0212 / POP 500,000
Ndola, the capital of the Copperbelt Province, is a prosperous little city that provides re-
lief from the pace and pollution of its larger cousin, Lusaka. In comparison it is clean and
well tended with no real evidence of its industrial base, although genuine visitor attrac-
tions are thin on the ground.
