Getting There & Away
Drivers should be aware of road conditions on the way to Siavonga. Minibuses from Lu-
saka (ZMW70, three hours, three to five daily) leave when bursting to capacity for
Siavonga and the nearby border. Alternatively, get a bus towards Chirundu and get
dropped off at the Siavonga turn-off; from here take a local pick-up (ZMW15) the rest of
the way. From the makeshift bus stop in Siavonga, you can easily walk to Leisure Bay
Lodge or Lake Safari Lodge. Leaving Siavonga, minibuses depart from near the market.
There are no official taxis in Siavonga, but there are plenty of unoffical ones or your hotel
can arrange a car to the border; otherwise, minibuses head here as well.
AROUND SIAVONGA
West of Siavonga are a number of alternative lake accommodation options. They provide
solitude and a more personalised way to experience a stay by the lake. Take the turn-off to
the west about 2km north of Siavonga. The track is very rough and a 4WD is recommen-
ded (in the dry season a high-clearance 2WD would probably suffice).

Village Point $$
( 0979 278676; www.village-point.com ; campsite per person ZMW30, tent hire
ZMW40, chalet per person incl full board ZMW300; ) This small property in a pretty
bush setting on a pen- insula in Lotri Bay, 40km west of Siavonga, is ideal for washing
away urban grit and everyday concerns. Very comfortable thatch chalets have an upper
storey open to the lake and the breeze, and couples should note the open-air bathtubs stra-
tegically located for sunsets; less expensive beds are available in basic huts. You can fill
your days with a local village tour, fishing, walks or just plain lazing about.

Sandy Beach Safari Lodge $$
( 0967 860739; www.sandybeachzambia.com ; campsite per person ZMW30, chalet
ZMW190/250; ) A quiet, secluded camp around 13km from the Siavonga turn-off, it
does indeed have a wonderful sandy beach - as long as the lake waters aren't too high.
The relaxed owner Herman the German gives the place a laid-back vibe, and a plethora of
activities are on offer such as windsurfing, abseiling and canoeing.
