lawn for camping along the riverbank. There are also six simple and clean tented chalets
with small decks. If you're on a budget, consider a block room, really nothing more than a
concrete box with beds.
A pool table, basic but cavernous bar area and riverside deck encourage socialising.
Other activities on offer are boat trips (ZMW50 per hour or ZMW200 per half day, plus
petrol), and River Horse Safaris, which operates out of Breezers, can organise recommen-
ded multiday canoeing trips on the Zambezi. The à la carte restaurant serves dinner mains
(ZMW60) of basic chicken, better burgers and steaks.
Gwabi Lodge $$

incl breakfast ZMW425/660; ) This long-running lodge, which sees mostly week-
ending Lusakans, is set on large leafy grounds 12km east of Chirundu. There's a well-
equipped camping ground (tents can be rented) and nine solid chalets with stone floors
and TVs (four new chalets were in the works). With a lovely elevated outlook over the
Kafue River, 6km from the confluence with the Zambezi, the decking in front of the à la
carte restaurant is a great spot to observe birds and wallowing hippos. Fishing is definitely
the draw or just having a poke around on a boat (per hour ZMW100, plus fuel), although
overnight canoe safaris can be arranged.

Getting There & Away
Minibuses leave regularly for Chirundu from Lusaka (ZMW30, 3½ hours, five to seven
daily). To reach Siavonga (on Lake Kariba) from Chirundu, catch a minibus towards Lu-
saka, get off at the obvious turn-off to Siavonga and wait for something else to come
along.
Lower Zambezi Valley
One of the country's premier wildlife viewing areas includes the Chiawa GMA as well as
the Lower Zambezi National Park, covering 4200 sq km along the northwestern bank of
the Zambezi River. Several smaller rivers flow through the park itself, which is centered
around a beautiful flood plain alongside the Zambezi, dotted with acacias and other large
