Mwaleshi Camp $$$
( 0216-246185; www.remoteafrica.com ; all-inclu- sive per person ZMW2900) A top-
notch operation, at once luxurious, in terms of care from the staff, and relaxed bush camp
with accommodation in four charmingly simple chalets made from reeds and thatch with
open-roofed bathrooms. Walking is the main activity and that's a fortunate thing once
you've tasted their excellent food. Spotted hyenas are commonly seen in this area as are
buffaloes and, of course, lions. The spectacular Mwaleshi Falls is another highlight. Most
guests on organised tours fly in and out of the national park on chartered planes.
BUSH CAMP
Buffalo Camp $$$
( 0976 970444; www.shiwasafaris.com ; all-inclusive per person ZMW1700) Located in
the south of the park, Buffalo Camp is a quiet, secluded place run by Mark Harvey, grand-
son of Stewart Gore Browne of Shiwa Ng'andu, where he was raised. It's good value (and
unusually welcomes children) and the six traditional-style thatch-roofed chalets overlook
the river. Book ahead for the 'self-catering rates' (ZMW500 per person excluding park
rates and bed levy), normally only available when there's a paucity of guests on the all-in-
clusive package. Transfers for those without vehicles are usually possible from Kapishya
Lodge or Mpika (maximum four people).
BUSH CAMP
BUSH CAMP
Kutandala Camp $$$
( www.kutandala.com ; all-inclusive s/d ZMW2800/ 3600) The hospitality is first rate at this
small bush camp with its three chalets, each with a nice big verandah fronting the Mwale-
shi River. A four- to five-night stay gives the opportunity for a thorough exploration of the
area on foot, and the camp only caters for six guests at a time so solitude is not hard to
find. The food is expertly prepared, all the more remarkable considering the camp's isola-
tion. A makeshift library is well stocked with wildlife and natural history books.
Getting There & Away
There is no public transportation. Most guests fly in and out on expensive charter flights
arranged by their lodge (typical price per person from Mfuwe to one of the airstrips is
ZMW1000 one-way); the result is that only several hundred people visit the park each
year.
