In-Depth Information
( 0216-245041; www.bushcampcompany.com ; per person per night all-inclusive
US$600; mid-Jun-Nov) A night-time arrival at Chamilandu is a magical experience -
a lantern-lit dinner table is set out under the stars and staff in chef's whites are lined up to
cook your Mongolian barbecue (just one of the dinner specials often served). Sunrise of-
fers another revelation when the true brilliance of the camps' design comes to light. Ut-
terly exposed to the elements, the elevated chalets have no fourth wall, only three sides of
expert carpentry work; you'll never want to spend more time in a bathroom.

( 0216-245041; www.bushcampcompany.com ; per person per night all-inclusive
US$600; end of Apr-start of Jan) Four enormous and charming wood, bamboo and
thatch chalets - the bathrooms themselves can house a family - surround a stunningly
beautiful watering hole; equally sizeable terraces (with a second shower) put you at arms-
length from the elephants who come to drink.
WHAT TO BRING
Clothes suitable for safari don't need to be specialised or expensive. It's colour that matters. Nothing bright that
can easily be spotted by wildlife and no black or very dark colours, which will attract tsetse flies. Go with greens
and light browns (no camouflage) and a combination of shorts for very hot days and long, lightweight trousers for
walking in the bush as well as cities and towns where dress is generally conservative.
Also bring binoculars, camera, of course, wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, high-ankle walking shoes, headlamp
or small torch and a squashable bag like a duffel (large, heavy and solid suitcases are harder to fit in the luggage
compartments of small planes).
And cash, either in US$ or ZMW for tipping guides (Zanaco has an ATM at the BP petrol station in Mfuwe vil-
lage if you run low).
