relax while you feast on the views. The accommodation itself is unusual: thatch wooden
chalets built on stilts with four-poster beds and white-tiled bathrooms. It provides airy
digs but makes you feel somewhat disconnected from the land.
It's located about 1.5km from the Nkwali pontoon and 9km southwest of Mfuwe. Fur-
ther south in the park is its sister camp, Island Bushcamp .

( 0216-246074; www.crocvalley.com ; campsite per person ZMW52, r without bath-
room ZMW78, safari tent from ZMW180; ) This sprawling, continually expanding
compound is set under a tangle of trees lining the riverbank. Because of all the ongoing
development it's difficult to sort out the range of accommodation - it's extensive. The
campground is popular with independent travellers; 'backpacker rooms' with shared,
clean toilets and showers, stone walls, mosquito nets and floor fans are quite a good deal;
safari tents of varying levels of luxury and cost run the gamut from air- conditioned semi-
permanent structures with private 'butler' service and separate bar and pool area (per per-
son ZMW416) to more standard ones with open-air, thatch-walled bathrooms.
There's a big bar (with its own menu of burgers and chips and the like), now the spot
for rowdy expat gatherings, and a restaurant with nightly three-course meals on offer for
those paying full-board (all-inclusive rates are offered), not to mention plenty of ham-
mocks and shaded chill-out spots. Wildlife drives (ZMW208) and walking safaris
(ZMW260) can be arranged, as can trips to a traditional healer in the village; in the dry
season, you can play beach volleyball on the river bed.

Track & Trail River Camp $$

( in Lusaka 0211-246020; www.trackandtrailrivercamp.com ; campsite per person
ZMW53, full-board chalet/safari tent $190/170; ) Set on a riverfront property about
400m east of Mfuwe Gate, and within walking distance of two boardering camps, are four
fairly luxurious chalets sleeping up to four, each with a deck overlooking the river. There
are also five large safari tents raised on concrete platforms with open-air bathrooms, some
a bit further back in the bush, and the camping grounds shaded by a giant African fig are
just lovely. An above-ground pool has an elevated deck with lounge chairs overlooking
the river. The bar and restaurant are built around a lime tree so, unsurprisingly, lime cock-
tails are its speciality and the food is excellent. There's also a 'wellness area' where you
can indulge in an aromatherapy massage and other such treats.
