In-Depth Information
Only to be considered as an option of the very last resort are the two extremely unpleas-
ant and basic guesthouses (Chiwayu and Cobra) in the village, both no cheaper than a few
Mfuwe area camps.
All the lodges/camps and camping grounds provide meals - from simple snacks to cre-
ative haute cuisine at the top-end places. Flatdogs Camp probably has the best food of the
'drop-in' lodge restaurants. Highly recommended by area expats and one of the few
places to eat in the village is friendly Dophil Restaurant (mains ZMW25; 5am-10pm)
. The owner/chef Dorika prepares samosas, spring rolls, T-bones with nshima and pizza,
served at a few outdoor tables under a thatch roof. If coming from the airport it's on the
left hand side of the road just after the Matizye Bridge.
BUSH CAMP COMPANIES
Only a handful of companies offer lodging within the park proper, primarily in what are generally referred to as
'bush camps'. Despite the misleading name, these are very comfortable, ranging from simple thatch-roofed
chalets to stylishly furnished tents with gold-plated faucets and plunge pools. Most have only three to five rooms
and offer customised itineraries that take guests to multiple camps by vehicle or on foot.
The three major companies, all with 'base lodges' near the Mfuwe Gate, are the following:
Bushcamp Company ( www.bushcampcompany.com ) Sophisticated and expertly managed by its founder Andy
Hogg. Operates six uniquely designed camps (Bilimungwe, Chamilandu, Chindeni, Kapamba, Kuyenda and Zun-
gulila), which are all in the southern section of the park, as well as its base Mfuwe Lodge ( Click here ).
Norman Carr Safaris Operates five somewhat more rustic camps (Kakuli, Kapani, Luwi, Mchenja and Nsolo) in
the northern section of the park as well as its base at Kapani Lodge ( Click here ).
Robin Pope Safaris ( Click here ) With its base at Nkwali ( Click here ) not far south of Mfuwe Gate, Robin Pope
Safaris operates three camps (Luangwa River Camp, Nsefu and Tena Tena).
The other companies in the park are the highly recommended Remote Africa (Chikoko, Crocodile and Tafika) in
the northern section run by John and Carol Coppinger, Sanctuary Retreats (Chichele, Puku Ridge and Zebra
Plains), Shenton Safaris (Mwamba and Kaingo) and Wilderness (Kalamu Lagoon).
