In-Depth Information
(Great East Road, Manda Hill Shopping Centre; mains ZMW45-115; lunch & dinner)
This theme restaurant - think Al Capone and gangsters - located on the mall's 2nd floor is
a night-time haunt of Lusaka's young, prosperous and stylish. While the service can be a
little desultory and the background noise renders conversations a challenge, the buzzing
atmosphere is rare enough to warrant a visit or two. The large menu specialises in steaks
and seafood though the quality is akin to, well, a theme restaurant.
Deli $
(Lunzua Rd, Rhodes Park; mains ZMW25; 7am-6pm Mon-Fri, 9am-2pm Sat; )
Boasting the best barista in Lusaka (the winner of an international competition) as well as
an enviable garden setting, the Deli is a good place to plant yourself for a few hours. The
sophisticated kitchen turns out all-day breakfast-like eggs and French toast, specialty
sandwiches like Asian pork meatball and classics like pastrami, wood-fired pizzas and
homemade ice cream. The turnoff from Addis Ababa Dr isn't clearly marked; look for the
'Inzy Advertizing Co' sign.
CAFE, BAKERY
INTERNATIONAL
Plates Restaurant & Wine Bar $$$
( 0211-841015; Acacia Park, Great East Road; mains ZMW60-95; noon-10pm
Mon-Thu, to midnight Fri & Sat)
In a modern office park with nice outdoor seating next
to Arcades Shopping Centre, Plates is quickly becoming regarded as one of the city's best
restaurants. A CIA-trained chef (not
that
CIA, the Culinary Institute of America) prepares
sophisticated dishes (the menu changes monthly) like almond crusted bream, Kansas bar-
becue- style ribs, plus good burgers and wraps.
INTERNATIONAL
Mint Lounge $$
(Acacia Park, Great East Road; mains ZMW45-85; 10am-10pm Mon-Fri, 9am-11pm
Sat & Sun; )
Look for this place, with a small, stylish dining room and pleasant outdoor
seating, in the inner courtyard of Acacia Office Park. There's an impressive selection of
Western-style creations such as tortilla wraps or freshly made open sandwiches for lunch
and omelettes for breakfast as well as pasta, steaks and specials like prawn risotto for din-
ner. Good coffee, smoothies and dessert pancakes round out the offerings.
Next door within Arcades Shopping Centre, in a darkened corridor just outside the en-
trance to the Protea Hotel, is another somewhat less inviting brightly lit location.
