The Running Stitch
Once your fabric is set up in an embroidery hoop, you're ready
to make your first stitches. Hold your threaded needle by the
eye, pinching both the working thread and the tail to prevent
unthreading your needle. Pierce your needle through the fabric,
working from the back to the front. Let go of the needle, then
bring your hand to the front and pull it through until the needle
clears the fabric.
Readjust your grip on the eye of the needle, then pull the thread
the rest of the way through but not all the way! Leave a four-inch
tail (10 cm) at the back of the fabric ( Figure 4-5 ). Later you can
use this tail to tie a knot, but for now just let it hang out. While
building projects you might leave an even longer tail that you
can thread back onto your needle for attaching to components!
