Sewing
Sewing is the act of attaching things together with a needle and
thread, either by hand or with a sewing machine. There are
many types of stitches appropriate for different fabrics and
projects, both functional and decorative. When building weara-
ble electronics projects with FLORA, you'll start out hand-
sewing conductive thread circuits ( Figure 1-14 ). If you have
patience, good lighting, and a comfortable seat, you might find
hand sewing to be quite relaxing! As a beginner you'll likely start
by modding garments you already have, but as you practice you
might soon find yourself drafting up patterns for designs all your
own! Learn more sewing basics in Chapter 4 .

Soldering
With a bit of practice, soldering ( Figure 1-15 ) is an easy skill to
learn and master.
Start by plugging in your soldering iron and getting it hot. Once
your soldering iron has reached the required temperature, clean
its tip with a damp sponge. Next, tin the tip of the soldering iron
by melting a bit of solder and wiping it away on the sponge.
Don't use the sponge for anything other than soldering after
you've used it to clean your tip.
