WATERY WAYPOINT
Travellers know Sipadan as a diving destination. But if you're a marine biologist (or a fish), you'll know Sipadan
as the grand highway interchange for the Indo-Pacific basin, one of the world's seminal marine habitats. Any trop-
ical fish worth its fins ends up swimming by here at some point. OK, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but the Sem-
porna Archipelago does sit atop a pretty incredible watery confluence, and Sipadan is the crossroads of that con-
fluence. Part of the reason is the excellent condition of local reefs; sadly, much of the nearby coral, especially in
the Philippines and Indonesia, has been seriously degraded by pollution and dynamite fishing.
