Camping
» In many national parks, camping is permitted only near park headquarters.
» If you pitch your tent in the vicinity of a longhouse, residents may get the impression
you're spurning their hospitality. Some travellers pitch their tent on the longhouse's
covered verandah.
» A two-season tent with mosquito netting is ideal, and a summer-weight sleeping bag or
just a bag liner will usually suffice unless you intend to hike at altitude. Choose a site that
won't be inundated if it rains.
Business Hours
» Opening hours for eateries vary widely. Many restaurants open from around 11.30am to
10pm or so. Kopitiam and kedai kopi (Borneo's ubiquitous coffee shops; ie no-frills res-
taurants) that cater to the breakfast crowd open very early - well before dawn - but may
close in the mid-afternoon or even before lunch. Others (generally the newer ones) start
service later in the morning and stay open until 9pm or 10pm.
» Bars usually open around dinner time and close at 2am.
» Bank hours are generally 10am to 3pm or 4pm on weekdays and 9.30am to 11.30am on
Saturday.
» Shop hours are variable, although small shops are generally open Monday to Saturday
from 9am to 6pm. Major department stores, shopping malls, Chinese emporiums and
some large stores are open from around 10am until 9pm or 10pm seven days a week.
» Government offices are usually open Monday to Friday from 8am to 4.15pm, and on
Saturday from 8am to 12.45pm. Most close for lunch from 12.45pm to 2pm; in Sarawak
the Friday lunch break is from 12.15pm to 2.45pm to accommodate Muslim prayers at the
mosque. In Brunei government offices are closed on Friday and Sunday.
