DANAU SENTARUM NATIONAL PARK
If you have two days or more, this 132,000-hectare seasonal wetland area, which resembles the lakes area of the
Mahakam, is begging for exploration. Surrounded by attractive mountains, it offers numerous islands, some in-
triguing villages, wildlife (including the red arowana, a trophy aquarium fish) and interesting boat journeys. Reach
the park via minibus from Putussibau to Lanjak (85,000Rp, 3½ hours), where you can rent a boat and see the is-
lands. Don't miss the newly renovated field station on Pulau Tekaneng , which has six rooms with shared baths
(100,000Rp with meals), or the village of Meliau , at the southern end of the lake, where you can find a basic
