There are no scheduled passenger boats upriver to Putussibau, but travel agents may be
able to find a speedboat going to Sanggau. If time is not an issue, try finding passage by
bandung , a combination freighter and general store that can take several days to a month
for the 800km journey. Price negotiable.
Bus
It is wise to consult a travel agent regarding the complex landscape of bus and Kijang op-
tions. For Singkawang, Sambas, Sanggau and the Entikong border crossing use the Batu
Layang bus terminal north of town. For air-con express buses to Kuching see Bintang
Jaya Offline map ( 659 7402; Jl Tanjungpura 310A) and the companies on Jl
Sisingamangaraja. Damri Offline map ( 744 859; Jl Pahlawan 226/3) also serves
Brunei. Buses to Putussibau via Sintang leave from the Kapuas Indah Building.
Car
Travel agencies can arrange a car with driver for 450,000Rp per day.
Getting Around
Airport taxis cost 90,000Rp to town (15km). Opelet (2500Rp) routes converge around Jl
Sisingamangaraja. Becak s (bicycle rickshaws) are available, but a dying breed. Taxis are
unmetered and scarce. Some hotels have Kijangs standing by; fares for these 'hotel taxis'
start at 40,000Rp.
