Getting There & Away
Boats leave for Samarinda daily between 11am and 2pm (120,000Rp, 15 hours, 325km).
To/from Tanjung Isuy, charter a ces (600,000Rp, four hours). The kapal biasa to Tering
departs at 2am (150,000Rp, five hours). A ces will cost 500,000Rp to 800,000Rp, depend-
ing on your negotiating skills. The daily bus to Samarinda (100,000Rp, nine hours) is a
very uncomfortable ride.
TERING
A planned community deep in gold-mining country, Tering (140,000Rp, 24 hours from
Samarinda) is sometimes the last stop for kapal biasa , depending on the water level. It's
really two settlements straddling the river: Tering Lama , a Bahau Dayak village on the
northern bank, and Tering Baru , a Malay village where the kapal biasa docks. The latter
is an ordered grid of cottages that can be circumnavigated on foot in 15 minutes, but
you'll want to pause at the highlight, a magnificent wooden church with intricate painted
pillars and a bell tower supported by totem poles. A speedboat to Long Bagun is
300,000Rp per person.
