Getting There & Away
The kapal biasa dock is 2km north of town, with angkot (2500Rp) service to the centre.
Ojek s cost 10,000Rp. Boats depart for Samarinda at 7am daily (20,000Rp, two hours) and
Kota Bangun at 9am daily (50,000Rp, six hours).
Petugas bus terminal is 5km south of town, also with angkot service to the centre
(5000Rp). Buses depart hourly from 9am to 4pm for both Samarinda (10,000Rp) and Kota
Bangun (23,000Rp).
There is no regular car service from Tenggarong. Kijang can be chartered for
150,000Rp for the first hour, 100,000Rp thereafter.
KOTA BANGUN
This busy town and transport hub is where upriver journeys generally begin. You can hire
a ces from here to take you through a complex of rivers, lakes and marshes interspersed
with villages. You'll cross lakes with wide-open skies, twist and turn through wetland
channels, pass through forests of silver-barked trees, lunch at riverside warungs, and gen-
erally breeze along, pausing for the odd monkey or some of the last few Irrawaddy dol-
phins. Don't miss it.

fan-cooled rooms and shared mandi . Pay up for light. There's a decent verandah to watch
spectacular sunsets, nearby warungs and, further down the road, an internet cafe and
ATM.

Getting There & Around
A ces from Kota Bangun takes 1½ hours to Muara Muntai (250,000Rp), just over two
hours to Jantur (325,000Rp), three hours to Tanjung Isuy (500,000Rp) and 6½ hours to
Mancong (900,000Rp).
MUARA MUNTAI
This riverside town is remarkable for its massive boardwalk, more than 2km long, which
serves as the main street. After sitting in a ces for hours, it's the perfect spot to stretch
your legs and hunt for a snack.
