Bajau Sea Gypsies deck out their lepa (boats) with streamers, bunting, flags, ceremonial

BORNEO JAZZ FESTIVAL
An eclectic assemblage of artists from Europe, North America and Southeast Asia makes
the Borneo Jazz Festival ( www.jazzborneo.com ) , held on a weekend in mid-May,
Borneo's premier jazz event. Formerly known as the Miri International Jazz Festival.
HARVEST FESTIVAL
Rice is the basis of Sabah's indigenous way of life. To mark the annual harvest, native
peoples gather in their home villages on 30 and 31 May for a colourful thanksgiving fest-
ival that's also known as Pesta Ka'amatan.
June
The weather is hot and humid, with rain always likely. June is the wettest month of
the year in Balikpapan (West Kalimantan). Tourist numbers rise because of the
northern hemisphere summer.
