Muslim and Chinese festivals follow lunar or lunisolar calendars and so vary relative to the
Western calendar. Approximate dates for 2013 to 2016 appear below; celebrations often be-
gin the night before these dates.
February
The weather is hot and humid, with rain always likely. February is one of the wettest
months of the year in Kuching (Sarawak) and Banjarmasin (South Kalimantan). The
seas off Sarawak and around Kalimantan's Derawan Archipelago can be rough.
CHINESE NEW YEAR
Borneo's Chinese communities, especially large in Sarawak's Kuching, Sibu and
Singkawang, welcome the New Year with bright-red lanterns, sweets, lion and dragon
dances, drum performances, night markets and, often, a raucous (and illegal) display of
firecrackers and fireworks. Falls on 31 January 2014, 19 February 2015 and 8 February
2016.
