MUARA'S BEACHES
Pantai Muara
(Muara Beach), near the tip of the peninsula, is a popular weekend retreat.
It's pretty, but like many beaches in Borneo it's littered with driftwood and other flotsam
that comes in with the tide. Quiet during the week, it has food stalls, picnic tables and a
children's playground.
About 4km west of Muara along the Muara-Tutong Hwy,
Pantai Meragang
(Cro-
codile Beach) is another stretch of pleasant seaside sand that's not quite as crowded as the
others on weekends. There are a couple of food stalls that make this a good place for a
picnic. We've never heard of crocodiles here, by the way.
The beaches are about 25km northeast of BSB around the cargo, ferry and naval port of
Muara, the site of an Australian amphibious landing in April 1945. Muara's town centre is
served by buses 37, 38 and 39 (B$1) from BSB city centre; bus 33 will take you from
Muara town to Pantai Muara. Pantai Meragang is difficult to get to without your own
transport.
Tours
A number of local agencies offer tours of BSB and trips to nature sites around the sultan-
ate, including Ulu Temburong National Park and the mangroves of Pulau Selirong, 45
minutes by boat from the city. Some also offer night safaris where you can spot proboscis
monkeys, crocs and fireflies.

Excellent service, good prices
and a variety of eco-programs around Brunei and Borneo. A day trip to Ulu Temburong
National Park costs B$120 from BSB (7.30am to 4.30pm or 5pm). Two days and one
night at the park, including food and activities, costs B$245 from BSB. The office also
serves as a useful tourism information centre.
