Arriving in Borneo
» Malaysia
Major airports, such as Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and Miri, have ATMs, car rental desks,
kiosks selling SIM cards, and orderly taxi queues with fixed prices and vouchers for trips
into town.
» Brunei
Brunei International Airport has ATMs, car rental and good bus connections with the
centre of Bandar Seri Begawan. City tours available for transit passengers. Singapore dol-
lars are universally accepted, with a conversion rate of one to one.
» Kalimantan
Taxis and other conveyances meet all incoming flights.
Well Dressed in Borneo
Despite the heat and humidity, adult men in Malaysian Borneo don't wear short pants in cities or towns, particu-
larly not in smart restaurants or hotels. In Kalimantan, however, shorts are very popular among men, especially
younger ones.
Likewise, women should remember that much of Borneo is largely Muslim and relatively discreet clothing is
recommended. You certainly don't have to cover your hair (except inside mosques), but walking around with a
tank top or bikini top is unwise.
Cotton clothing never really dries in the jungle, so bring at least a few fast-drying synthetic items.
