The Uncle Tan empire is one of the oldest back-
packer/adventure travel outfits in Sabah. Now they've set up shop in the heart of Sepilok
with a couple of decent thatch-roofed gazebos and a stack of backpacker shacks.

Everyone seems to stay here but it's hard to see why. Well, no, it's not - this is a big stop
on the package-tour path. Some rooms are a bit drab: cheap carpeting and bedspreads and
musty windows. Renovated rooms are a better deal - the sort of clean, if institutional hotel
room you'd expect at home (but in a jungle).
Most accommodation in the area serves breakfast, and some offer guests three-meal
packages. The

vends sandwiches,
noodle bowls, rice plates, snacks and beverages, though they are known for running out of
items during the tourist rush.

small hut with a blue fence at Batu 14 serving snacks and cold drinks.

Information
Sepilok is located at 'Batu 14' - 14 miles (23km) from Sandakan. The street connecting
the highway to the centre is lined with various accommodation (except Paganakan Dii,
which is located on the other side of the road).
It's best to get money in Sandakan, but an ATM had been installed in a Petronas station
on the road between Sandakan and Sepilok. The next-closest ATM is in Sandakan Airport.
Money can be changed at upmarket sleeping spots for a hefty change fee.
Getting There & Away
Bus
Bus 14 from Sandakan (RM3) departs hourly from the city centre. If coming from KK,
board a Sandakan-bound bus and ask the driver to let you off at 'Batu 14'. You will pay
the full fare, even though Sandakan is 23km away.
