Sights
Central Sandakan is light on 'must-see' attractions, although history buffs will appreciate
the Sandakan Heritage Trail brochure available at the tourist office. The centre, where
you'll find most hotels, banks and local transport, consists of a few blocks squashed
between the waterfront and a steep escarpment from where you can look out over the bay
(Teluk Sandakan). Warning: don't go to Sandakan Crocodile Park unless you like watch-
ing sadly neglected reptiles.
Chinese Cemetery
Sandakan's massive Chinese Cemetery essentially takes up all of a valley that runs into
the hills east of Sandakan. Gravesites are studded into the slopes, many shaped by feng
