Eating
KK is one of the few cities in Borneo with an eating scene diverse enough to refresh the
noodle-jaded palate. Besides the ubiquitous Chinese
kedai kopi
(coffee shops) and Malay
halal restaurants, you'll find plenty of interesting options around the city centre - head to
the suburbs if you're looking for some truly unique local fare.

Never had Xinjiang cuisine? This is the food of China's northwest frontier: spicy, rich
and meaty, and damned delicious anytime of day. Moon Bell, run by a superlatively
friendly Chinese granny, blows us away with spicy eggplant fried in a sweet, caramelized
laquer of dark sauce, gamey roast lamb, crispy-skinned duck and hearty clay hotpots. It's
best to come here with a big group and eat family-style, just as all the locals do.

nically part of the Gayana Eco Resort, Alu-Alu is a delicious restaurant that sources its in-
gredients from Borneo Eco-Fish, an organisation dedicated to harvesting and distributing
seafood from sustainable sources - no shark fin here. Besides having a bit of a moral mis-
sion, Alu-Alu is legitimately delicious. It takes the Chinese seafood concept to new levels
- lightly breading fish chunks and serving them drowned in a mouth-watering buttermilk
sauce, or simmering amid diced chilies. Even the vegetables, simply steamed with a side
of pungent garlic, are a main event as opposed to an afterthought.

, we gotta highly recommend this delicious option.
