FIND YOUR WAY IN KK
Downtown KK is a dense grid of concrete buildings nestled between the waterfront and a range of low, forested
hills to the east. It's compact, walkable and easy to navigate - most of the restaurants, markets, accommodation,
tourist offices and tour operators are located here. Transport terminals bookend the city on either side.
Sunday Market
Offline map Google map
(Jln Gaya; 7am-3pm Sun) On Sundays, a lively Chinese street fair takes over the entire
length of Jln Gaya. It's a pretty manic scene and a perfect spot for souvenir shopping, but
animal lovers may want to avoid some sections.

sects Beach Street; pet kittens and puppies are put out for sale in mesh cages and they don't look happy in the mid-
day heat. Locals don't seem to mind, and to be fair, most vendors try to provide water and shade for the animals, but
many Western travellers are put off by the sight.
BEYOND THE CITY CENTRE
Some of KK's best attractions are located beyond the city centre, and it's well worth put-
ting in the effort to check them out.
Sabah Museum
( 253199; www.museum.sabah.gov.my ; Jln Muzium; admission RM20; 9am-5pm
Sat-Thu; ) Centred on a modern four-storey structure inspired by the longhouses of the
Rungus and Murut tribes, this is the best place to go in KK for an introduction to Sabah's
ethnicities and environments. It's slightly south of the city centre, on the hilly corner of
Jln Tunku Abdul Rahman and Jln Penampang.
In the main building there are good permanent collections of tribal and historical arte-
facts including ceramics and exhibits of flora and fauna - some dusty, others well presen-
