Smaller, more independent local artists can and do make potentially inflammatory state-
ments about the state, but, for their own safety, it needs to be done on a smaller scale. On
the whole, art is well supported in Beijing, and artists enjoy a little more liberty than the
media. Some would say there is even more tolerance for artistic rebellion in Beijing than in
other cities.
“There's no animosity toward art,” says resident Canadian artist Michael Eddy. “It won't
bring down the government.”
