In-Depth Information
Beijing's art scene is dominated by commercial galleries. Art can be big dollars, espe-
cially for Chinese artists who have been able to make a name for themselves, and fortu-
nately for them, Beijing's wealthy have an insatiable appetite for contemporary art and con-
spicuous consumption. Not all Chinese art, however, is about creating corporate or home
jewelry for the nouveau riche. Many artists have their own position and are doing their
own thing, making social comments or experimenting with new directions. It's surprising
to see just how far some artists in Beijing push the envelope or gamble with censorship.
There's the notorious bad boy Ai Weiwei, internationally renowned and well connected loc-
ally. Though the law has tried to shackle him, he has the power, family connections, and
international following to provide him with some protection.
