Shunyi district is an expat enclave as well as the residence of wealthy Chinese who dream
the international dream of having a house, a white-picket fence, and a double garage in
which to park their luxury vehicles—the first for its permitted days of driving, the second
for the other days. Just six or so years ago, this was very much countryside with few amen-
ities, while today it's Western suburbia transplanted into Beijing.
In almost all cases, the expats who live out here are families, those who have been sent
by their companies on packages, and who have children attending the international schools.
