In-Depth Information
Much farther south in Haidian, but definitely not to be forgotten, is the Wukesong
Camera market ( www.bjphoto.com.cn ) . This amazing market stocks everything the novice
or professional photographer could need, including Holgas, Lomos, Rolleiflexes, antique
secondhand cameras, sports-journalist-sized lenses, lighting equipment, books, specialty
film, and bags. Modest bargaining can be done, but generally prices are fairly straightfor-
ward. You'll find it at 40 Wukesong Lu (Fourth Ring Road), a 10-minute walk north of
Wukesong subway station (Line 1, exit B1).
Fortunately, Haidian is more than just fibers and motherboards. When you arrive, make
a trip to Five Golden Star Market. This wholesale market is a cheap place to stock up on
crockery, glassware, utensils, and cookware. And while there, you can acquaint yourself
with the fresh food market next door. It's the place to get fresh meat and fresh fruit and
veggies. Find it on Mingguang Lu, just south of Dazhongsi subway station (Line 13) on
the east side of the railway line. Supermarkets are also big in Haidian. Three of the biggest
include Carrefour ( www.carrefour.com.cn ) , in Zhongguancun Plaza (Haidianhuangzhuang
subway station, Lines 4 and 19, exit A2); Auchan ( www.auchan.com ) on the West Fourth
Ring Road near Zizhuyuan Lu, and the Wal-Mart Supercenter ( http://wal-martchina.com )
by Zhichunlu subway station (Lines 10 and 13, exit B).
Zhongguancun is a head-spinning treasure chest of electronic gadgets and components.
