HEALTH CARE
Haidian may have very few international health facilities, but it does have an abundance of
health-care options. For starters, most of the universities have their own hospitals. These
are typically basic level-one hospitals, which operate more like clinics for general ills and
aches, but they're cheap and familiar with the international student population. Haidian then
also has many of Beijing's top-level government hospitals.
One of the most important hospitals is the People's Liberation Army General Hospital
(PLAGH), still sometimes going by its old name of the 301 Military Hospital
( www.301hospital.com.cn ) . Being a general hospital it covers all areas of care for both the
military and civilians. It is also one of the few hospitals in the district to have a VIP/interna-
tional medical clinic (tel. 10/6829-5858), although English abilities are patchy. The hospital
is conveniently located on Fuxing Lu (Chang'an Jie) at the southeast corner of Wukesong
subway station (Line 1, exit C1).
Following on with the military theme, there is also the Air Force General Hospital
( www.kj-hospital.com ) , located on Fucheng Lu on the east side of Xidiaoyutai subway sta-
tion (Line 10, exit C); the Navy General Hospital ( www.hjzyy.com.cn ) , also on Fucheng Lu,
to the west of Baizhuizi subway station (Line 9, exit D); and the Armed Police General Hos-
pital ( www.wj-hospital.com ) , located on Yongding Lu about halfway between Wukesong
and Yuquanlu subway stations (Line 1).
If going to a military hospital, however, makes you a little nervous, there is Peking
University Third Hospital, also known as PKU Third Hospital ( www.puh3.net.cn ) . This
is also a top-level comprehensive hospital, but it's particularly respected for its work in
gynecology and obstetrics, sports medicine, cardiovascular and orthopedic departments, in-
vitro fertilization, and reconstructive surgery. It's closer to the universities on Xueyuan Lu
near the North Fourth Ring Road, with its closest subway station being Xitucheng (Line 10,
exit B).
Another non-military hospital to be aware of is the Beijing DCN Orthopaedic Hospital
( www.dcn.org.cn/Eng ) . While this hospital isn't in the most convenient location, being out
beyond the West Fourth Ring Road on Fushi Lu, it was the designated hospital for injured
athletes during the Beijing Olympics and so can be worth the trip for the right injury.
Dental needs can be met out here by the same chains of clinics that service much
of the inner city, including Arrail Dental ( www.arrail-dental.com ) , Jiamei Dental
( www.jiameidental.com ) , SDM Dental ( www.sdmdental.com ), and A&S Dental
( www.aiyashi.com ) . An alternative to the private clinics is the Peking University School of
