EDUCATION
It doesn't need to be said that Haidian is the place for further education. Students from
all around the world come here to study not only Chinese, but many other majors and
postgraduate courses. The most obvious choices are Peking University, Renmin University,
Tsinghua University, Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU), Beijing Normal
University, and Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), and if your main purpose is to
study Chinese then these are good choices, but they may be out of your budget. If that's the
case, some of the lesser-known universities may also be an option—and don't be dissuaded
by a name that suggests that they teach anything but Chinese.
But what about for kids? There are definitely fewer expat-friendly educational choices in
Haidian than in the east, and the choices that are here are not purely international, but rather
local schools with an international department. The main exception to this is St. Paul Amer-
ican School, a private preparatory and boarding school on the west side of the Olympic
Forest Park, about one kilometer north of Lincuiqiao subway station (Line 8).
In south Haidian, a short distance south of Yuquan subway station (Line 1), Beijing Na-
tional Day School warmly welcomes international students, as do the schools attached to
Renmin University and Tsinghua University farther north in the district. Tsinghua Inter-
national School is perhaps the most international of the three. It requires students to hold
a foreign passport and has a dynamic program directed carefully at preparing its students
for university abroad. Admission fees are not cheap, but they're much more approach-
able than many of the international schools in Shunyi or Chaoyang. Tsinghua International
School, for example, starts from RMB89,000 for elementary school and RMB99,000 for
high school. If you enroll your child for a second semester, the fee drops by 40 percent.
Dormitory accommodation, if necessary, is RMB9,000 per semester for a two-person room.
