In-Depth Information
Zhongguancun Plaza Pedestrian Street
Zhongguancun has a city feel about it, but with little glitz and zero glamor. The streets
are lined with mall after mall, above ground and below. You can virtually walk the entire
way underground from Haidianhuangzhuang subway station (Lines 4 and 10) to Zhong-
guancun subway (Line 4) and see nothing but shops, clothes, and electronic products lit by
fluorescent lights. People come here to work in the various high-tech parks, and others are
drawn from other districts to pick up their next hard drive, camera, or laptop.
Housing
Living within the center of Zhongguancun—anywhere between Zhongguancun Dajie,
Haidian Nanlu, and the North Fourth Ring Road—can feel a little soulless. That said,
everything is right at hand—several movie cinemas, a large post office, a Carrefour super-
market, and so on. Compared to elsewhere in the inner city, it can also be much easier to
find affordable accommodations. You can start to find reasonable two-bedroom apartments
from as little as RMB5,000. Quality can vary from shocking to fantastic within a single
compound, but if you're lucky you might find one owned by a landlord who takes pride in
the property.
