Places of Interest
Chaoyang is packed with interesting places that can take up a position in your or your
family's life to make it more interesting. Compared to the inner city, this part of town is
relatively new, so places of interest tend more to be modern buildings than ancient treas-
ures. There are architectural structures that will have you grabbing your camera, such as
the CCTV Headquarters at Xintaixijiao (Line 10) near Guomao; the China World Tower,
Beijing's tallest building, just a block away; and many of the Olympic buildings in the
north.
Immerse yourself a little deeper with a visit to one place that has been protected, Dongy-
ue Temple, an ancient Daoist temple from the Yuan period (1279-1368). It covers 4.7 hec-
tares (11.6 acres), which is always surprising considering the squeeze of modern commer-
cial buildings around it. You'll find it on Chaoyangmenwai Daijie, halfway between Chaoy-
angmen subway station (Lines 2 and 6) and Dongdaqiao subway station (Line 6). More
culture can be found at the Chinese Ethnic Culture Park (China Nationalities Museum,
www.emuseum.org.cn/en ) , located near the Olympic Green (Olympic Sports Center sub-
way station, Line 8, or Beitucheng subway station, Lines 8 and 10). This attraction was
primarily built to appeal to tourists coming for the Olympics, but today it's still an enjoy-
able day out for the family and introduces you to China's 56 ethnic groups.
