In-Depth Information
Eye problems can be treated at Beijing Aier Intech Eye Hospital ( ht-
tp://en.intecheye.com ) , just southwest of Panjiayuan subway station (Line 10). One prob-
lem in Beijing that many expats experience is that though there are thousands of spectacle
shops, there are few fully trained optometrists, and usually the shop attendant will both test
your eyes and sell you your frames. Beijing Aier Intech Eye Hospital is a multilingual facil-
ity, and specialist services include eye prescriptions, 24-hour emergency service, Lasik sur-
gery, and treatment for eye disease. Direct billing is available for many international health
providers.
In Liangmaqiao, nearby residents have access to the International Medical Medical
Center (IMC), at the back of the Beijing Lufthansa Center and just a short walk from Li-
angmaqiao subway station (Line 10, exit C). Arrail Dental is just one block farther up Li-
angmaqiao Lu at the corner of Maizidian Jie.
In Lido we hit the jackpot. This is the hot spot of medical care. The Beijing United Fam-
ily Hospital, with its various wings and clinics, is a prominent operation, but others include
Oasis International Hospital, Amcare Women's & Children's Hospital, and Smart Health
Medical and Dental Center.
The Olympic area has fewer purely Western services, though two of Beijing's leading
local hospitals are close by if needed. Anzhen Hospital, a short walk south of Anzhenmen
subway station (Line 10), is a highly regarded hospital and specializes in cardiology, while
the China-Japan Friendship Hospital, near Huixinjie Nankou (Lines 5 and 10) and Shouyao-
ju (Lines 10 and 13) stations, is a top-level national hospital and has a VIP/international
wing that expats should feel comfortable in.
Finally, animals are also well taken care of in Chaoyang. Doctors Beck & Stone have
several clinics in Chaoyang, including one just west of Pingguo Shequ near Xidawang Lu,
one at Chaowai SOHO in the CBD, and then their Chaoyang Park clinic, which is really
more like Lido. The International Center for Veterinary Services (ICVS) is at Wangjing.
SHOPPING AND DINING
Shopping
There is no shortage of places to spend your money in Chaoyang, and wherever you go
there is a hulking mall within walking distance. Usually it doesn't matter too much which
one you go to—most are roughly the same, housing the same brands of clothes and eateries.
A few stand out, however, such as Indigo in Lido, Nali Patio in Sanlitun, North Village in
Sanlitun, China World Mall at Guomao, and possibly U-Town southeast of Chaoyangmen
subway station (Lines 2 and 6), although the jury is still out on that one.
