reliance on bus transportation would have also stifled any appeal the district might have
had for some. These days things are very different. Line 4 can shoot residents directly up
into Haidian and its university and tech areas, while Line 6 can deliver them to bar hot spot
Nanluogu Xiang or over to the CBD (Central Business District). Given this, Xicheng might
be worth considering when you're house hunting. Its improved accessibility may now mean
that you can enjoy the dual lifestyle of working or studying in a modern part of the city by
day, and having an old Beijing experience by night.
CHAOYANG
Chaoyang is the most obvious choice for newcomers. It's not only the location of the CBD
but also two of the three embassy areas. Consequently, over the years it has evolved in-
to Beijing's most international district. It has the highest concentration of quality Western
restaurants, bars, and brunch-loving cafés; English signage and service means you'll rarely
have to break out a dictionary; apartments styled for Western taste are in ready supply; and
there are more international supermarkets here than anywhere else in the city. When foreign
brands foray into the Beijing market, it's usually here that they test the waters, and when an
expat event is held the venue is almost always a Chaoyang one. Naturally, life in Chaoyang
means minimal culture shock, and when you touch down you'll likely feel only the slightest
of bumps as you adjust to your new life in the city.
