SUBWAY
This is the simplest, most reliable, and often the fastest mode of transport around town, but
it's a relatively recent addition to the city. For two decades between 1981 and 2001 Beijing
got by with just two lines, 1 and 2. Ever since 2002, however, the city's subway system has
exploded. There are now 15 lines and 218 stations. By 2015 there will by 19 lines in ser-
vice.
The Beijing subway is a cheap and convenient way to get around most parts of the city center.
Subways cost a flat rate of RMB2, regardless of how many lines you need to use, and
children under 1.2 meters (47 inches) ride for free if with an adult. The Airport Express
costs RMB25, again regardless of which stop you get off at, Sanyuanqiao or Dongzhi-
men. By comparison, a taxi fare to Dongzhimen from the airport, including tolls, will cost
RMB80-100.
It's best to buy an Yikatong travel card and simply swipe your way in and out of the
gates; however, if you need to buy a one-off ticket, you can use the ticket machines. These
all have English and are simple to use.
Subways generally run from 5am (the Airport Express starts at 6am) and finish at around
11pm. Rush hour is definitely a nightmare on many lines, particularly Lines 1, 2, and 5. At
major stations, such as Guomao or Sihui, you may not even get onto the first several trains
