recharge cards.
English newspapers are even scantier than magazines, and it's no secret that the govern-
ment has a heavy hand when it comes to pruning their content. There are two main English-
language newspapers— The China Daily and Global Times —but being in English by no
means saves them from the government's shears. They're both readily available from news-
stands and convenience stores. Occasionally you might be able to get your hands on a copy
of the South China Morning Post. This is an English-language newspaper from Hong Kong
and can sometimes be picked up if you're visiting a hotel. Ultimately many expats simply
turn to the websites of international newspapers for their news on the Middle Kingdom, as
these can be much more penetrating than those based in Beijing. You may at times need a
VPN/proxy to leap the Great Firewall to access them.
Both Global Times ( www.globaltimes.cn ) and the China Daily
( www.chinadaily.com.cn ) have online versions, as do two of China's largest news sources,
the People's Daily ( http://english.peopledaily.com.cn ) and Xinhua ( www.chinaview.cn ) .
